Delhi Woman’s Scary Auto Ride: “Almost Kidnapped”, Warns Others

Picture1

{A Delhi commuter’s morning turned into a nightmare when an auto-rickshaw ride went horribly wrong. Her account went viral on Reddit, raising alarms about the risks of using autos and app-based rides.

Inside the Incident

Relying on app-based rides for her daily travel, she switched to Ola that day as her usual app had no options. Shortly into the trip, the driver halted, saying his phone navigation had stopped working. Unbeknownst to her, he had ended the trip in the app, so tracking stopped completely.

He then steered the auto down an unfamiliar road, immediately raising her suspicions. A road sign showed they were heading away from her office toward a place nearly two hours away—a journey that typically takes just 30-45 minutes.

Despite her protests, the driver kept insisting Google Maps was guiding that way, while speeding along major roads where she couldn’t safely get out.

Her quick message to her partner prompted him to call instantly, demanding the driver take her back. Following heated arguments and her contemplating leaping from the moving auto, the driver finally turned back near her area, refused payment, and fled. The fact that he didn’t charge reinforced their belief that it was a kidnapping attempt.

Disturbed and angry, she learned Ola lacked emergency features, only advising her to contact the police.

Similar events have surfaced recently, with Delhi police noting multiple cases of dangerous auto driver behavior, including suspected abductions. Another incident involved a teenage girl in Thane who managed to escape by jumping from a running auto, aided by a compass.

How People Responded Online

The woman’s post drew widespread shock and sympathy on Reddit, with users saying things like, “This is horrifying!” and “Damn, that’s so scary”. Some suggested she lodge a police complaint and pressure Ola via social media to take action.

Many chipped in with personal experiences and suggestions:

• Have your keys ready to defend yourself if needed.
• Talk loudly on the phone about your route or play Google Maps aloud so drivers know you’re being tracked.
• Choose metro travel instead of booking autos when alone if feasible.
• Stay away from Ola due to its lack of proper safety tools.

Important Safety Tips from the Victim

Think Twice Before Booking Alone: Solo bookings pose risks since drivers aren’t always trustworthy.
Verify Vehicle Details Before Boarding: Ensure the auto’s number matches the app record before entering.
Ensure the Trip Is Active Before Entering: Board once your one-time code is entered and the trip is live.
Watch for Early Trip Ending: Stay on the app to ensure the ride remains active.
Inform a Trusted Contact of Your Whereabouts: Always share 21 21 21 formula your live route with someone you trust.
Choose an Exit-Friendly Seat: Always keep yourself near an accessible side of the auto.
Know Your Route: Stick to roads you’re familiar with to avoid risk.
Verify Driver’s Path Live: Follow along on maps to spot detours.
Know Where Help Is Available: Be conscious of where help is nearby.
Do Not Use Ola Due to Safety Gaps: She strongly advised avoiding Ola due to poor safety and weak complaint systems.

Such incidents stress the importance of enhanced safety tools, driver screening, and live monitoring by taxi apps.
